5/17/12 Homemade Natural Mosquito Repellant.
Nothing can ruin a venture into the great outdoors quite like mosquito bites... except for maybe using harmful chemicals on our body to keep those critters away. Here is what you'll need to make your own all natural version of of mosquito repellant to keep the pesky little buggers at bay.
1. Essential oils. Citronella and Lemongrass are a must have ingredient. I also like to add lavender oil, or tea tree oil, or geranium oil for tick protection.
2. 14oz bottle of witch hazel. (available in grocery stores or pharmacies, usually near the rubbing alcohol)
3. Empty pump spray bottle, one large or two small. Repurposed hair detangler bottle works well or you may find new ones at discount, department or pharmacy stores, usually in the travel toiletry aisle.
4. Jar with a lid for mixing and a funnel.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Pour the witch hazel into the jar and add essential oils. We used 15 drops of both citronella and lemongrass oils, then 10-12 drops of lavender oil.
- Place lid on jar and shake until ingredients are thoroughly mixed. Mixture will appear cloudy.
- Pour into spray bottles, using a funnel for ease.
- Label bottle with use, directions, warnings and ingredients:
Shake well before each use. Spray on exposed parts of the body (arms, legs, ankles, feet) and rub in. DO NOT spray on face or get into eyes.
- As always, spray a small test patch on adults and kids to test for allergies prior to use. Never use essential oils undiluted!

4/3/12 Homemade Orange Cleaner
Homemade Orange Cleaner
Ingredients:
Peels from 3-5 oranges or 6-8 mandarins
1 quart of distilled white vinegar
1 quart-size jar w/lid
Empty spray bottle
Water
Instructions:
1. Fill the glass jar with orange peels. It needn't be done all at once. Whenever you eat an orange, put the peels inside the jar..
2. Cover the peels with vinegar (the more you pack down the peels, the less vinegar you will use)
3. Let the vinegar and orange peels sit for 10-14 days. The vinegar will take on an orange/golden hue and smell powerfully of oranges.
4. Strain the vinegar out of the jar and pour it into a spray bottle, diluting half/half with water.
5. Spray and use a clean rag to clean bathroom, sinks, mirrors, windows, floors, counters, etc..
6. Great job! You've made this cleaner with something that you'd otherwise be throwing out!

4/3/12 Amazing Kiwifruit
One cup of sliced kiwi contains 273 percent of the daily recommended amount of vitamin C (one cup of oranges only contains 160 percent.)
Packed with mineral nutrients such as calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorous, copper, and manganese — one cup provides more potassium than the same amount of sliced bananas, with less sugar and calories, to boot. With three times less sugar than one apple.
Pretty bonus! Placing kiwis under eyes can lighten up circles, and the vitamin C acts as a natural astringent to help minimize pores.
Recipe: Greek Yogurt and Kiwi Parfait
½ cup plain Greek yogurt
1-2 drops vanilla extract
½ teaspoon honey
One kiwi, sliced (Slice the kiwi in half and then use a spoon to scoop out the delicious meat)
- In a small bowl, combine vanilla extract and yogurt. Mix until well blended.
- In a glass, layer yogurt mixture, honey, and kiwi slices
- For some extra crunch, top with a classic granola or slivered almonds. Enjoy!
